It's Bat Appreciation Month! 🦇

The Topeka Zoo is home to Indian Flying Foxes, one of the largest bat species in the world, with wingspans reaching up to 5 feet!

Flying Foxes enjoy fruits like mangoes, bananas and papayas. As they eat, they help disperse seeds and pollen across long distances, making them important contributors to healthy ecosystems.

On your next visit, stop by the Rainforest and say hi to our Flying Foxes!

Big wings, big journeys, and an important reminder: every bird counts! 🦢

Today is World Migratory Bird Day, a chance to celebrate the birds that travel across vast distances and the habitats they depend on along the way.

Did you know that some trumpeter swans migrate between their breeding and wintering grounds, while others stay in the same general region year-round? No matter where they call home, protecting healthy wetlands is essential for swans and many other waterbirds.

This year’s theme, “Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter!”, reminds us that every bird sighting can help scientists better understand and protect bird populations.

Our trumpeter swans, Silla and Miso, are here to remind us that every bird counts!
